Gutter Contractors in Brentwood, CA: How to Choose

A short checklist for comparing gutter bids: license, contract terms, materials, scope and warranty.

1. Check the license

California lists gutters within the C-43 Sheet Metal classification (CSLB). Enter the license number at cslb.ca.gov and confirm it is active, bonded and in the contractor's business name.

2. Insist on a written contract

CSLB says home improvement projects over $500 need a written contract, and the down payment cannot exceed $1,000 or 10 percent of the price, whichever is less (CSLB). Do not pay more up front than that.

3. Compare like with like

  • Linear footage and gutter size (5-inch or 6-inch)
  • Profile (K-style or half-round) and material, with thickness
  • Number, size and discharge of downspouts
  • Removal and disposal of old gutters
  • Guards, if wanted, with the exact product named
  • Fascia or trim repairs, if needed

4. Ask about warranty and timing

Get the workmanship warranty in writing, along with start and finish dates. Ask what happens if a seam leaks or a hanger pulls loose after the first winter.

Hiring questions

What license does a gutter installer need in California?

The Contractors State License Board describes sheet metal work, including gutters, under its C-43 Sheet Metal classification. Look up any contractor's license, status and bond at cslb.ca.gov. Rules for small jobs have exceptions, so ask the contractor to explain how their license applies to your job.

Is a written contract required?

CSLB says a written contract is required for home improvement projects over $500, and that a down payment cannot be more than $1,000 or 10 percent of the contract price, whichever is less.

How many quotes should I get?

Two or three comparable written quotes make differences in scope and materials visible. Make sure each quote lists the same footage, size, material and downspouts so you are comparing like with like.
