Gutter Repair in Brentwood, CA
Overflowing, dripping or pulling away from the house? Most gutter problems have a few common causes. Here is how to tell them apart, what repair involves and what it tends to cost.

Common gutter problems
Leaking seams and joints
Sectional gutters leak where sections join, and sealant at corners and end caps dries out over time. Resealing is usually inexpensive; many leaking seams in one run can be a sign it is time to replace.
Sagging or pulled-away gutters
Loose hangers, rotted fascia or the weight of debris and standing water pull a run away from the house. Re-hanging with new hangers fixes many of these; if the pitch is wrong, the run may need to be adjusted so it drains toward the downspout.
Holes and rust
Small holes can be patched; widespread rust or corrosion is a replacement signal.
Clogs and overflow
Overflow in the rainy season, which runs roughly October to May here (Weather Spark), usually means a clogged gutter or downspout, not a broken one. Clearing it is the first step.
Why do gutters overflow in heavy rain?
Short answer: the water arriving is more than the gutter can carry away. Four causes account for most overflow, listed from cheapest to fix to most involved.
- Clogged gutter or downspout. Debris blocks the flow. Clearing it usually fixes it.
- Wrong pitch or sagging. Water pools instead of draining toward the downspout. A hanger or pitch adjustment may be enough.
- Too small or too few downspouts. Sizing guides suggest one downspout for roughly every 25 to 35 feet of gutter, with 6 inch gutters used for larger roofs (Angi). A long run with a single downspout can overflow even when clean.
- Roof valleys and corners. Where two roof planes meet, water can speed up and shoot past the gutter edge. Installers commonly add a splash guard or deflector, or a larger outlet. Ask a contractor to look at this spot in a storm if it is where yours spills.
If it spills in one place only, note where. That tells the installer which of the four it is. Send that detail with your request.
Downspout problems
Disconnected, crushed or clogged downspouts dump water at the foundation. Check that water leaves the downspout and flows away from the house.
What gutter repair costs
HomeGuide lists the average repair at $100–$450+, section replacement at $6–$17+ per foot, hangers at $2–$3+ each and small-hole repair at $100–$225+ for a one-story home (HomeGuide). These are national figures; get a written quote.
Repair or replace?
Repair when the damage is local and the metal is sound. Price replacement as well when problems are everywhere, the gutters are corroded or dented, or they are old. See replacement cost and seamless installation.
Safety first. Working on a ladder at the roof edge is risky. Consider hiring a pro for anything above one story.
Gutter repair questions
How much does gutter repair cost?
Published national figures for gutter repair run from about $75 to $900 or more, depending on the problem. Sealing seams runs about $1.50–$6.50+ per linear foot, and re-hanging a sagging run is listed from $75 to $300+.
Why do my gutters overflow when it rains hard?
Most often the gutter or downspout is clogged. Other causes are a sagging or mis-pitched run, too few or too small downspouts for the roof, and roof valleys that throw water past the edge. Note where it spills, because that location points to the cause.
Why are my gutters leaking?
The usual causes are failed seam sealant, small holes or rust, loose or missing hangers that let a run sag, and clogs that make water overflow. Overflow from a clog is often mistaken for a leak, so clear the gutter first.
Should I repair or replace old gutters?
Repair makes sense when the damage is limited and the gutters are otherwise sound. Replacement is worth pricing when seams leak in many places, the material is corroded or bent, or the gutters are near the end of their typical life: Angi says aluminum is usually replaced around 20 years.
What if the fascia board behind the gutter is rotted?
Water that overflows or leaks behind a gutter can rot the fascia. HomeGuide lists fascia replacement at about $6–$20+ per linear foot when the roof edge has rotted. The gutter often has to come off to fix it, so it is worth getting both priced together.
