Gutter guide
Are Gutters Required by Code in Brentwood, CA?
The honest answer is that we could not confirm a specific local rule. Here is what the sources we checked do and do not say.
Verify locally. We could not retrieve the California residential code text, and we found no Brentwood, Oakley or Antioch page that requires or exempts gutters. Confirm with the city building department before relying on this page.
What we found
- A general (non-California) explainer says gutters are usually not required by the International Residential Code, with exceptions for very short roof overhangs and homes on expansive or collapsible soils, where roof drainage must be directed away from the foundation (How To Look At A House). That is secondary and not specific to California.
- Contra Costa County's re-roof requirements call for flashing at gutters, but do not address whether gutters are required (Contra Costa County).
- We found no city page stating a permit rule for gutter work. Ask your building department.
Even if not required, drainage matters
Water that falls beside the foundation can cause problems over time. Ask a contractor how roof water will be collected and where it will go, whether or not gutters are required.
What to do
- Ask your city building department whether your project needs a permit.
- If you are in an HOA, check its rules.
- Ask your contractor to confirm in writing how roof drainage will be handled.
