Seamless vs Sectional Gutters: Which Is Better?

Both work. The difference is how many joints there are, what they cost and how they are repaired.

How they differ

Sectional gutters come in short lengths joined together. Seamless gutters are formed on site from a flat roll into one continuous run (LeafFilter), so a straight run has no mid-run joints.

Sources disagree on sectional lifespan, so treat these as rough guides.

The downsides of seamless

  • Higher price per foot.
  • Corners and downspout outlets are still joined and can still leak.
  • They still clog; seamless does not mean maintenance-free (LeafFilter).

Which should you choose?

For a permanent installation on a typical home, many homeowners choose seamless for the fewer joints. For a small, short run or a tight budget, sectional can be reasonable. Ask for both priced, with the same size and material. See the cost guide.

Common questions

Do seamless gutters leak?

They can leak at corners, end caps and downspout outlets, where pieces are still joined. A straight run has fewer places to leak than a sectional run.

Can seamless gutters be installed by a homeowner?

This Old House says seamless gutters require professional installation because they are formed on site with a machine.
